How Local Touches Global

From Shannon Daley-Harris:

A local book group picked the book as one month's selection. After the group had read it, they had me come speak. One of the participants, who had been featured in the book, was departing the next day for a return trip to Burma/Myanmar. Another participant had been inspired by one of the Our Day actions, and brought to the book club meeting several of the dolls she had knitted that will serve as cushioning for medical supplies being sent overseas, and then the dolls will be given to children there. Another couple were inspired by the water chapter and have committed to taking each of their grandchildren to a developing country to build a well that they will fund.

Marcia Van Dyke, a member of the Presbyterian Child Advocacy Network, has written a review of Our Day for the Presbyterian Health, Education, and Welfare Association Newsletter.

Towards that end they have cultivated an amazingly engaged community and nurtured their interest in fighting poverty through activities like their Urban Engagement Book Club. Our Day to End Poverty will be featured as a title for this group in 2008, and we couldn't be more pleased!

At noon on the first Thursday of each month, Central Dallas Ministries hosts a 75-minute encounter with some of the most important books on the issues that we care most about in our work among our inner city neighbors. We call the experience "Urban Engagement Book Club."
